FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is a Food Bank?
A) A food bank is a place where stocks of food, typically basic provisions and non-perishable items, are supplied free of charge to people in need. Food banking systems capture surplus food, source for food and deliver it to the people who need it most, and engage all sectors of society (governments, business, and civil society) in the process.
B) Food banks acquire donated food, much of which would otherwise be wasted, from farms, manufacturers, distributors, retail stores, consumers, and other sources, and make it available to those in need through a network of community agencies. These agencies include, hospitals, school feeding programme, emergency camps.
C) A food bank is a non-profit, charitable organization that distributes food to those who have difficulty purchasing enough food to avoid hunger.
Food banks purpose is not to solve the problem of food poverty in the society, but rather to provide emergency relief. The function is ameliorative and should be judged in that light. At the same time it can be argued that food banks can fulfill important health prevention function.
