When was LFBI established?

Lagos Food Bank Initiative was legally registered with Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in 2015 and commenced operations officially with a brand on February 14, 2016. We have decided to pick February 14, 2016 as our official commencement date for the purpose of anniversary.

Is LFBI owned by Lagos State Government?

Lagos Food Bank is not a state owned initiative. It is %100 private and its funding is %100 from the private sector. LFBI however work with Government Agencies like Primary Health Care Centers in different LGAs, and LASEMA to offer nutrition intervention and emergency relief support to vulnerable citizens.

Is Lagos Food Bank limited to only Lagos State ?

Lagos Food Bank is noted limited to only Lagos State.

What was your motivation for starting the Initiative?

Lagos Food Bank Initiative started as a personal past experience of the founder who as a child experienced food-insecurity. According to him, went to school severally on an empty stomach and also went to bed hungry. As a result, he started to fend for himself at a young age to get food.

His past experience of food insecurity coupled with the fact that over 60% live on less than $2/day prompted him to start Lagos Food Bank which to date has helped over 1,000,000 people to attain food security across several communities in Lagos.

What does it take to get an LFBI certificate?

Lagos Food Bank awards community service Certificate to volunteers who have successfully completed 100hrs of community service with the food bank. In addition to this we are awarding certificates to all volunteers who participated and completed 100hrs of community service during COVID-19 Emergency Food Intervention Program.

As a corporate body what are the benefits of partnering with Lagos Food Bank?

We provide more Visibility of your brand on our social media page to thousands of people. Lagos Food Bank Initiative has a cumulative of over 100,000 followers on all social media platforms: Instagram, Twitter, Linkedin and Tik-Tok, with over 9000 email contacts of active volunteers and stakeholders. Does your organization issue certificate of donation to top/regular donors?

Lagos Food Bank issues certificate of donation/donation summaries to top/regular donors. Please refer to our annual report to see examples of top donors.

What Food items Do You Need the Most?

Grains: Rice, Beans and Garri;  we also accept all kinds food items provided they are edible.

How can I be a volunteer?

To become a volunteer, fill out the volunteer registration online form to get started. Once filled and submitted, an on-boarding confirmation email will be sent to your registered email.

Further information on the volunteering procedures and volunteer guidelines will be sent to your registered email as part of the on-boarding process.

As a Volunteer Can I also be a beneficiary of Food Relief

No; a volunteer is not allowed to be a beneficiary. However any volunteer willing to be a beneficiary will cease to be a volunteer to enjoy all the status of a beneficiary.

Do you accept fresh food donations? Do you accept perishable items?

Yes! We have cold chain storage and can accept perishable items like frozen chicken, turkey, and ground beef, as well as fresh vegetables and fruit, yams and plantains. We encourage you drop these items off at the food bank in person or call 07031295645 to finalize on logistics.

How do you engage volunteers who can’t attend outreaches?

Lagos Food Bank keeps our volunteers up-to-date with events and progress of ongoing projects via emails, and our social media platforms. You can also apply to be an intern or volunteer your time in office administration at Lagos Food Bank. The office administration activities include, fundraising, food sourcing, research, social media, graphic design, videography, photography, volunteer management and engagement, communication, nutritionist, Business Development, Donor relations, Finance, Policy and advocacy, programs, Agriculturist, Warehouse management, operations to name a few. How do you get your funds to?

Do you pay your volunteers?

We do not pay our volunteers except for the Intern volunteers who are paid monthly stipend to cover transportation only.

How do you measure your impact?

Lagos Food Bank measures its impact by calculating the number of people reached through its programs i.e. NUMEPLAN, Edufood, Community Nutrition Education, Job placement, NIDS, etc., and the number of people served coupled with the progress made before, during and after the intervention.

Do you accept drug donations?

Yes, we accept all types of drug donations. You can donate the most wanted on our list are medications such as pain-relievers, fever reducers, anti-malaria drugs, de-worming tablets, multi-vitamins (Vitamin B complexes, blood tonics, Vitamin supplements, Ascorbic acid), gloves, anti-sceptics wipes and sprays, anti-fungal drugs and anti-biotic drugs to name a few.

Can I celebrate my birthday with your initiative?

Yes, we love celebrating our volunteer’s and donor’s birthdays. Mostly via all our social media platforms with a minimum of N20,000. All birthday donations for the particular month are channeled collectively toward our feeding programs and the end of month outreaches.

Do you do outreaches for every birthday donation?

Birthday donations amounting up to a minimum of N120,000 are eligible for community outreaches. However, to ensure adequate planning and for all other enquires, send an email to contactus@lagosfoodbank.org

Do you pick up food items/clothing?

We have six drop off points as follows:

Do you have any special program for widows?

We have a comprehensive database of widows across several communities who we call to reach out to from time to time.

How many volunteers does the Food Bank need?

We need as many volunteers as possible. We can never have enough. Currently, approximately 7000 volunteers are on our database who assist us from time to time, donating more than 800 hours of volunteered time per month.

Can I bring a group?

Our volunteer projects can accommodate groups of various sizes and can provide team-building opportunities.

I want to volunteer, but I never know my schedule in advance. Can I just show up?

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate walk-up or walk-in volunteers. All Lagos Food Bank programs and outreaches have a maximum capacity due to space, resource and logistics limitations. It is our goal to provide the best possible experience for each of our volunteers, so it is important for our volunteers to confirm attendance before each outreach program.

Can children participate?

Yes! We love your families, schools or youth groups to join us. Volunteering is a great way to teach children about service and spend some quality time with them. However, children volunteers must be accompanied by an adult (registered volunteer).

Is there need for Guardians for the children volunteer?

Yes, an adult guardian must accompany volunteers under 12 years old. All guardians must also be a registered volunteer.

What if I need to cancel?

Can I come for just an hour or two?

Our projects are designed for specific time periods, so we ask that volunteers commit to the entire shift or program hour. For that reason, it’s also very important that you arrive on time!

How does Lagos Food Bank help the hungry in Lagos?

The Food Bank provides foods to those at risk of hunger through a network database of more than 7,000 volunteers and programs operating throughout 86 community service areas.  The Food Bank also advocates for public policy that provides nutrition assistance and addresses the root causes of food insecurity.

How does the Food Bank acquire food?

Food is sourced from you, our donor.

How much food is distributed?

200,000 people were served. (we surpassed our goal for the year, by 100,000)

50,000 KG of food was distributed.

Can the hungry get food directly from the Food Bank?

Yes, we welcome food insecure beneficiaries at the food bank but we ensure to do more background check to ensure beneficiary fall into the category of vulnerable and poor.

What communities are served by LFBI?

Since inception in 2015, we have served up to 109 rural and under-served communities in Lagos and over 1, 500,000 beneficiaries, especially children between the ages of 0-16 years, the youths and vulnerable women in the rural communities.

How old do you have to be to volunteer?

For safety purposes, the minimum age for volunteering is 12.  Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

What is your organization's privacy policy?

Our organization takes our privacy policy seriously and takes measures to protect and ensure the safety of our supporters. We do not sell or otherwise disclose information about our volunteers or supporters outside of our immediate organization. This policy has no exceptions. We do not sell or exchange your information with any other organizations, public, private or nonprofit.

How many programs do you have?

Our programs are divided in to three aspects: Feeding programs, Maternal Health & Nutrition programs and Sustainability/Self-reliance programs. Under the Feeding programs, we have EDUFOOD program, Mobile Pantry and Monthly Outreaches. Maternal Health & Nutrition program is our NUMEPLAN. Sustainability/Self-reliance programs are Family Farming and Job Placement programs.

How do you identify potential beneficiaries?

  1. We visit slum communities to identify the most indigent families who cannot afford basic amenities.
  2. Direct referrals from hospitals, Primary Health Care facilities (PHCs) and schools.
  3. Beneficiaries from destitute communities.
  4. Vulnerable and malnourished pregnant women and children.
